About the Blind Chocolatier
The Blind Chocolatier is more than a chocolate business - it’s the story of determination, resilience, and a passion for craftsmanship in the face of life-changing challenges.

The Blind Chocolatier is the story of Stuart Hann, a Lake District chocolatier who rebuilt his career after losing his sight, creating handmade chocolates that are now enjoyed across the UK.
Stuart’s Early Career in the Lake District
Growing up in the heart of the Lake District, Stuart Hann trained as a pastry chef at Kendal Catering College. After completing his training, he secured a full-time role in a local hotel, where he spent eight years developing his skills in an award-winning 2 Rosette restaurant.
Losing His Sight
In July 2015, Stuart’s life changed dramatically. Over the course of just three weeks, his eyesight began to deteriorate rapidly. After months of hospital visits and specialist consultations, he was diagnosed with a rare condition called Leber’s Hereditary Optic Neuropathy (LHON), which led to permanent sight loss.
A New Beginning
Losing his sight meant stepping away from the career he had worked so hard to build. Everyday tasks became more challenging, and the future was suddenly uncertain.
Creating The Blind Chocolatier
Inspired by Michel Roux Jr’s Kitchen Impossible, a programme supporting people with disabilities into hospitality, Stuart found the motivation to rebuild his path and pursue a new direction. Determined to continue working with food, Stuart turned to chocolate - a craft that allowed him to focus on flavour, texture, and creativity. From this, The Blind Chocolatier was born.
The Blind Chocolatier Today
Today, The Blind Chocolatier is based in Staveley in the Lake District, where Stuart creates handmade chocolates that have been featured on BBC and ITV. Each product reflects his dedication to quality, precision, and passion for his craft.
Every box of chocolates tells a story - not just of flavour, but of resilience and determination. By choosing The Blind Chocolatier, you’re not only enjoying handmade chocolates, but also supporting a truly unique journey.
